Rev. Dr. Samuel Modupe Idowu was born into the family of Pastor Okelana Idowu
and Comfort Omolewa Idowu in 1924 at Oluwo village in Ibadan. His father served at
the Anglican Church, Oluwo and was the founder of the Assembly.
It had been prophesied from his childhood that Samuel Modupe Idowu had a “call”
as a servant of God and that he had an assignment for his generation and
generations to come after him.
Samuel Modupe Idowu, as a young man, was not privileged to attend any formal bible school, but his calling was extraordinary and supernatural. His wife (Late Evangelist Rachel Adenihun Idowu) invited him to a random prayer meeting led by Prophet Nwaka where he, Samuel Modupe Idowu, was endowed with the Spirit of God and started hearing God’s voice audibly, prophesying with accuracy and precision, and was nicknamed “Woli Dudu” (the black prophet).
He was initially working as an agriculturist at More-Plantation, an Agriculture Institute
in Apata, Ibadan. His calling and his zeal for God’s work made him to resign and he
became a full-time servant of God, operating under the Prophetic anointing.
Sooner than later, he had another encounter with God through a gospel tract that he
read and the message in it opened his eyes of understanding beyond the prophetic
alone, but into the evangelistic transformation and the pastoral ministry.
The afore-mentioned transformations led Samuel Modupe Idowu into selfdevelopment strategies. His hunger and quests for kingdom advancement and
knowledge led him into investing in and building a Christian library, because “a
reader is a leader”. It therefore was not a surprise that Samuel Modupe Idowu
became a great leader in the Christendom and made great impacts in the lives of all
that had an encounter with him. You didn’t have to be a Christian to be around him;
his open arms embraced people of other religions, creed and race.
In time and over 60 years ago, Rev. Dr. S M Idowu founded Divine Love Gospel
Church International and became the first president of the church. Today, many
Pastors, Evangelists, Apostles, Teachers, and Bishops had been raised, mentored,
and trained through his ministerial works, which led to the evolution of other
independent Ministries universally.
His tentacles spread into non-denominational Christian organisations. He was
recognized and admired as one of the few truest men of God of his time and was
honoured to serve as the first chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria
(PFN) of the old Oyo State. Also, he became the first Chairman of Operation Good
News (OGN) in Ibadan and the Vice Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria
Oyo State. He was instrumental to the many city-wide crusades of foreign
missionaries like Morris Cerullo, Reinhard Bonnke, Benson Idahosa, Uma Ukpai,
Yakubu Yako, and so on; and served as a trusted adviser to the great leaders of The
Redeemed Church of God, Gospel Faith Mission International, Assemblies of God,
Foursquare Gospel Church, Christian Church and many more.
